つく【突く･衝く･撞く】

1 〔とがった先で刺す〕 pierce, stick; (ナイフで) stab; (針などで) prick; (角･きばで) gore; (やりで) spear; lance; 〔先がぶつかる〕 strike (against…).

●軽く肩先を突く stick sb's [sb in the] shoulder lightly

・ぐさりと心臓を突く stab [strike] sb in the heart 《with a knife》; thrust 《a knife》 into sb's heart

・魚を突きに行く go spearfishing

・天を突く摩天楼の群れ soaring skyscrapers.

2 〔押しつける〕 push; thrust; give a push [thrust]; (指･棒で) poke; (棒切れなどで) prod; (頭で) butt; (ひじで軽く) nudge; elbow.

●横腹を突く poke sb [give sb a poke] in the ribs

・指で額を突く tap sb on the forehead with one's finger

・(親しげに) ひじでそっと突く give a friendly nudge

・書類に判を突く stamp one's seal on a document.

3 〔(刺激などが) 突然襲う〕

●ガスのにおいが鼻を突いた. The smell of gas stung my nose.

・異様な臭気が鼻を突いた. An offensive smell assailed my nostrils.

・悲しみが胸を突いた. I was struck [overcome] with sorrow.

4 〔ねらいすます〕 take aim at…; 〔攻める〕 attack; assail; (突撃する) charge (at)….

●核心を突く get to the point; touch the core; get to the heart of the matter

・弱点を突く take advantage of sb's weak point

・その弱点を突かれる be attacked at that most vulnerable point

5 〔障害を顧みない〕 brave 《a storm, dangers》.

6 〔支えにする〕

●机にひじを突く rest one's elbow on a desk.

●彼女はひざを突いて子供に話しかけた. She knelt down and spoke to the child.

・彼は両手に松葉杖を突いていた. He had crutches under both arms. | He was walking on crutches.

7 〔跳ね返らせる〕 bounce.

●まりを突く bounce a ball

8 〔打って鳴らす〕 strike; bang.
